Jesse Heintz
Jesse Heintz is an Archaeologist for Ember Archaeology, joining in 2024. During the summer, Jesse assists Senior, Project, and Permit Archaeologists with Historic Resource Impact Assessments/Mitigations (HRIA/HRIM) throughout the Boreal and Lower Foothills sub-regions of Alberta, as well as Preliminary Field Reconnaissance (PFR) and Archaeological Impact Assessments (AIA) throughout the Interior Plateau culture zone of British Columbia. In the winter months, Jesse assists with lab and reporting tasks. Such as, artifact analysis and cataloguing, photography, site forms, and site mapping in QGIS, to name a few. Although Jesse is new to Ember, and Alberta archaeology at large, he is working diligently to gain industry knowledge and experience.
Jesse earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology (minoring in History) from MacEwan University, and is currently completing a Master’s degree at the University of Alberta. His Master’s research focuses on methods of raw material interpretation in southwest Tanzania, and the technological capacities of anatomically modern humans throughout the Middle-Late Stone Ages. In 2017, Jesse participated in the Edmonton Mill Creek Archaeology Project field school, where he helped assess the Vogel’s meat packing plant. In 2019, Jesse took part in a research position in Tanzania, where he analyzed multiple Early-Late Stone Age sites. Additionally, his research position also focused on a women’s artisanal basket cooperative in the Iringa region. A few of Jesse’s favourite topics of study include biological anthropology, artifact analysis, archaeological theory, archaeology of death, and world prehistory.
Jesse’s favourite aspect of Cultural Resource Management is the ability to uncover details about the past. After completing his Master’s and gaining adequate professional experience, Jesse plans to acquire permit holding status in Alberta. Jesse also intends to gain professional experience in multiple provinces across Canada. During his free time, Jesse enjoys playing video games, gardening, cooking, listening to podcasts, hiking, and spending quality time with his friends and family.
